Founded as The Bird World in 1922 by Humphrey A. Olsen, Snowy Egret assumed its now-familiar title in 1924 and adopted its present magazine-sized format in 1929. In 1951, under Mr. Olsen's continuing editorship, the journal expanded its coverage from its original ornithological emphasis to include all types of nature writing. Now in its ninth decade, with new editors who share Mr. Olsen's vision, Snowy Egret continues to explore the literary, artistic, historical, psychological, and philosophical aspects of natural history.
